Unforgivable
29 December 2006Proof-reader on strike?
15 December 2006The curse of twenty-four hour news: no one takes the time to spellcheck.
“Detectives investigating an sex assault on a woman on her 20s believe the same attacker could have struck before.”
“…in nearby Barnt Green in October…near Bart Green Baptist Church…”

In the news
13 December 2006From the BBC:
“Britain’s teenagers risk becoming a nation of “Vicky Pollards” held back by poor verbal skills, research suggests.
And like the Little Britain character the top 20 words used, including yeah, no, but and like, account for around a third of all words, the study says.”

Where, oh where, to begin?
First: ‘your personal attention’ is a tautology: the envelope is addressed to ‘The Householder’ as an individual, so personal attention is implicit.
Second: of course it was delivered by hand. I’ve never seen an envelope post itself through my letterbox.
And finally, not so much grammar as a general gripe: it was sent in the post – it wasn’t ‘delivered by hand’ in the caring manner they seem to suggest. How stupid do they think I am?
